Most stocks in the Southeast Asian region were in green territory on Monday (20/08). So was Indonesia's benchmark Jakarta Composite Index. The index rose a whopping 1.87 percent to close at 5,892.19 points at the first trading day of the new week, pairing some of the losses it has suffered in recent weeks.
On Saturday (18/08) the opening ceremony for the 2018 Asian Games was held in the Gelora Bung Karno stadium in Central Jakarta. It is only the second time in history that Indonesia hosts this event (the first time being in 1962). Between 18 August and 2 September 2018, Asian athletes will compete in nearly 500 events, involving 40 sports disciplines.
There are a couple of interesting points when studying the government's proposed 2019 State Budget (that was unveiled by Indonesian President Joko Widodo on 16 August 2018). Firstly, and this is a usual phenomenon when legislative and presidential elections are around the corner, the proposed budget is characterized by a high degree of "populism". Secondly, the macroeconomic assumptions of the government seem much more realistic than usual.
Adding more pressures onto the rupiah, Indonesia's Statistics Agency (BPS) announced on Wednesday (15/08) that the country's trade balance deteriorated significantly. In July 2018 Indonesia had a USD $2.03 billion trade deficit, much bigger than had been expected by analysts (and constituting the widest monthly trade deficit in the past five years). The latest deficit was particularly attributed to rapidly rising imports into Southeast Asia's largest economy.
