Indonesia's ranking improved in the World Economic Forum (WEF)'s Global Competitiveness Report 2017-2018. In the latest edition, released earlier today (27/09), Indonesia ranks 36th, up from 41st in last year's edition. In the 2017-2018 edition, a total of 140 countries are analyzed (using 12 pillars of competitiveness) and ranked by WEF, a Swiss non-profit foundation.
The Transportation Ministry of Indonesia hopes to attract up to IDR 40 trillion (approx. USD $3 billion) in investment commitments from (foreign) investors during the fourth Asia-Europe Transport Ministers Meeting, held on Bali between 26-28 September 2017. These investments are needed to finance 12 infrastructure projects in Indonesia that are on offer.
Emdeki Utama, a leading Indonesian calcium carbide manufacturer, was added to the Indonesia Stock Exchange on Monday (25/09). The company became the 22nd company to conduct an initial public offering (IPO) in Indonesia so far in 2017. There are now 556 companies listed on the local exchange.
Traditional retail companies in Indonesia need to change their business-as-usual mindset to overcome fierce competition from online shops or e-commerce. In line with rising Internet and smartphone penetration as well as improving infrastructure, more and more goods and services can now be purchased online - often at more competitive rates -, implying the role of Indonesia's "old fashioned" traditional retail companies is on the decline.
