  • Miners Need Certainty about Indonesia's Mineral Ore Export Ban

    Entrepreneurs in Indonesia urge the central government to provide clarity about the ban on exports of unprocessed minerals that is set to be implemented on 12 January 2017, provided the government will not alter its policy. Initially, the full ban would be introduced on 12 January 2014 in an effort to boost the downstream mining industries (hence becoming an exporter of mining products that are positioned higher in the value chain rather than remaining dependent on raw materials that are very vulnerable to volatile price movements).

  • Indonesian Stocks Extending Rally, Rupiah Slightly Weaker

    Indonesian stocks surged further on Wednesday (28/12). The benchmark Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) was up 1.75 percent to 5,192.19 points by 11:00 am local Jakarta time on Wednesday, extending the impressive 1.50 percent jump one day earlier that effectively ended a nine-day losing streak for Indonesian stocks. This positive performance is, partly, believed to be the result of "window dressing" ahead of the year-end. Meanwhile, other Asian markets are rather mixed today.

  • Steel Sales in Indonesia Expected to Grow in 2017

    Sales of steel in Indonesia are expected to grow 7 percent year-on-year (y/y) to 15 million tons in 2017, from an estimated 14 million tons of steel sales this year. This growth is attributed to rising infrastructure development in Indonesia and the lower gas price (which is expected to be a reason for the nation's steel manufacturers to boost output). Purwono Widodo, Director for International Relations of the Indonesian Iron and Steel Association (IISIA), said steel sales in Indonesia fell in 2015 but rebounded in 2016.

  • Blasphemy in Indonesia: Trial of Ahok Continues in 2017

    Ahok's controversial blasphemy trial will continue. This is the decision of a panel of five judges that was announced on Tuesday (27/12) at the third session of the trial. At this session the judges of the Jakarta Court rejected defense arguments that the indictment contains inaccuracies, violates human rights and therefore should be annulled. The next session is scheduled for Tuesday 3 January 2017 at the Ministry of Agriculture building in South Jakarta. Blasphemy is an offense that carries a maximum prison sentence of five years in Indonesia.
