• Ceramic Sales Indonesia Bleak in Q1-2016 on Sluggish Property Sector

    Ceramic sales in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2016 are estimated to stand at 85 million square meters (m2) only, far below the 100 million m2 target that was set by the Indonesian Ceramic Industry Association (Asaki). Weak demand for ceramics in Indonesia is primarily caused by the country's sluggish property sector that is yet to rebound after several years of slowdown. Elisa Sinaga, Chairman of Asaki, stated that despite ceramic sales having improved slightly in late-2015, demand fell again in the first quarter of 2016 and remained weak up to the start of April 2016.

  • Indonesia's Higher Non-Taxable Income to Influence Consumption?

    Indonesia's plan to  raise people's (annual) non-taxable income by 50 percent to IDR 54 million (approx. USD $4,090) is estimated to add 0.3 percentage point to consumption growth in Indonesia according to Indonesia's Finance Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro. Last week, Brodjonegoro announced this tax incentive with the aim to strengthen Indonesians' purchasing power and encourage household consumption. Household consumption, which accounts for about 56 percent of Indonesia's overall economic growth, has been curtailed in recent years amid slowing economic growth, high inflation and the weak rupiah rate (against the US dollar).

  • Coffee Export Indonesia Targeted at $1.4 billion in 2016

    Indonesian Trade Minister Thomas Lembong targets an increase in the value of Indonesia's coffee exports of between 10 - 15 percent (y/y) to around USD $1.36 billion in 2016, up from USD $1.19 billion one year earlier. One key strategy to boost Indonesian coffee export is by broadening the export markets through promotional activities. An example is the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) Expo 2016, to be held between 14-17 April 2016 in Atlanta, Georgia (USA). At this event a total of17 Indonesian specialty coffees will be on display.
