  • Official Result Indonesian Presidential Election 2014 Expected this Afternoon

    The General Elections Commission (KPU) is expected to release the official result of the 2014 Indonesian presidential election after 16:00 pm local Jakarta time on Tuesday (22/07/2014). First, the institution will complete the recapitulation of votes in the five remaining Indonesian provinces as well as the votes that have been cast abroad, across 96 countries. Based on the preliminary results of the KPU and various credible quick counts, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has won the election by a five percentage point margin.

  • Indonesian Culture: Annual Mudik Tradition ahead of Lebaran Has Begun

    The annual mudik tradition has started in Indonesia. The term mudik refers to the exodus of Indonesian workers from the cities back to their hometowns ahead of Lebaran (the Indonesian name for Idul Fitri) which starts on 28 July 2014. Lebaran, a national holiday (from 28 July to 1 August), marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan and is usually celebrated at people’s places of origin, implying that Indonesian cities become more-or-less deserted for one week. In the week up to Lebaran people start to mudik.

  • World Bank Indonesia Economic Quarterly: Structural Reforms Needed

    The World Bank revised down its forecast for economic growth in Indonesia for the year 2014. In the July 2014 edition of the Indonesia Economic Quarterly, the institution projects economic growth in Southeast Asia’s largest economy at 5.2 percent, slightly down from its previous forecast of 5.3 percent. The downgrade is the result of a weaker outlook for commodity prices and tighter credit conditions. Moreover, the growing fiscal deficit contributes to the challenges that will be faced by the new government (which will be inaugurated in October 2014).

  • Indonesia's Presidential Election Result: Prabowo Subianto or Joko Widodo?

    With only one more day to go before the General Elections Commission (KPU) will release the official result of the July 2014 presidential election, it seems almost certain that it will take a Constitutional Court ruling for the final judgement. Over the weekend, data from KPU indicates that Joko Widodo has won the election by a margin of about five percentage points. However, his rival Prabowo Subianto has already stated that he will challenge the result as he claims that there are indications of fraud at several polling stations.
