• New Mining Law of Indonesia: Construction of many Smelters Delayed

    The construction of smelting and refining facilities in Indonesia - as stipulated in the new and controversial 2009 Mining Law - remains troublesome because several mining companies have delayed construction pending the judicial review of the 2009 Mining Law by the Constitutional Court of Indonesia. Meanwhile, Indonesia's Association of Bauxite and Iron ore Entrepreneurs (APB3I) said that the construction of 5 bauxite smelters need to be postponed due to financial uncertainties.

  • Latest News Update: Boat Carrying Indonesians Sinks off Coast Malaysia

    On Thursday (19/06), Malaysian rescuers intensified the search for 26 missing Indonesians after their wooden boat had capsized during a storm on Wednesday (18/06) while making the journey from Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) to Indonesia (Aceh, Sumatra). Nine people have died, while 26 persons remain missing. At least 62 people have survived the disaster. Reportedly, the boat, carrying mostly illegal Indonesian workers who returned to Indonesia to participate in the Ramadan and Idul Fitri festivities, was overloaded.

  • Indonesian Rupiah Down on Oil Price, Fed Meeting and Political Uncertainty

    The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate came close to the IDR 12,000 per US dollar mark on Wednesday (18/06). Based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index, Indonesia’s currency depreciated 0.87 percent to IDR 11,997 per US dollar. Bank Indonesia stated that the weakening is due to violence in northern Iraq (giving rise to a higher oil price which subsequently pressures the financial balance sheets of countries that import oil, such as Indonesia), and concern about results of the Federal Reserve meeting (17-18 June 2014).
