• Which are Indonesia's Most Profitable Listed State-Owned Enterprises?

    As companies' corporate earnings reports covering the first quarter of 2014 have been released since the last couple of weeks, it is interesting to take a quick look at the top ten most profitable Indonesian state-owned companies (SOE) that are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). The ten companies are ranked on highest net profit in Q1-2014 in the table below. It is interesting to note that four of these companies are banks, while there are two pairs of cement producers and construction companies.

  • Unemployment in Indonesia Declines to 5.70% of the Total Labor Force

    On Monday (05/05), Statistics Indonesia announced that unemployment in Indonesia declined to 5.70 percent (of the total labor force) in February 2014, equivalent to 7.2 million people in absolute terms. Compared to August 2013 (when Indonesia's unemployment rate was 6.17 percent), this constitutes a marked improvement. However, growth was limited compared to February 2013 (when unemployment was 5.82 percent), Data on Indonesia's (un)employment are released twice per year, covering conditions in the months February and August.

  • Indonesian Crude Palm Oil Producers Post Good Financial Results in Q1-2014

    Indonesian companies engaged in the production of crude palm oil (CPO) recorded impressive financial figures in the first quarter of 2014. Combined, 13 CPO companies that are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange posted IDR 3 trillion (USD $260.9 million) in net profits over the first quarter of 2014, a 116.1 percentage growth from the same period last year. Main reasons for this growth are the sharply depreciated Indonesian rupiah exchange rate in combination with the rising global CPO price and looming new El Niño cycle.

  • Running Mate of Jokowi for Indonesian Presidential Election Announced Soon

    Indonesian newspaper Investor Daily reported that on Friday 9 May 2014 Joko Widodo, the presidential candidate of the PDI-P (winner of the April 2014 legislative election), will announce his running mate for the presidential election. According to the newspaper, Surya Paloh - founder of the NasDem party - said that the running mate (vice-presidential candidate) has already been agreed upon although he declined to mention a name. The PDI-P and NasDem formed a coalition last month in order to nominate a presidential candidate.
