    Semen Indonesia, formerly known as Semen Gresik, is Indonesia's largest cement producer. The company, which is one of the few Indonesian companies that has spread its wings abroad for business expansion, forms the holding company of three large cement producers: Semen Gresik (East Java), Semen Padang (West Sumatra) and Semen Tonasa (South Sulawesi). Although the company lost a couple of percentage points in terms of market share, it still dominates Indonesia's lucrative cement industry.

  • Central Bank of Indonesia Raises Benchmark Interest Rate to 6.50%

    The central bank of Indonesia, Bank Indonesia, has raised its benchmark interest rate (BI rate) and deposit facility rate (Fasbi) by 50 bps to 6.50 percent and 4.75 percent respectively. Bank Indonesia governor Agus Martowardojo said that this policy change is necessary to keep Indonesia's inflation figure within the target range. Last month, prices of subsidized fuels were raised by the government, which led to higher inflation in June (5.90% YoY). However, the impact of higher fuel prices is expected to make a deeper impact in July.

    Fortune Indonesia, a business magazine, has compiled a top 100 of the most profitable Indonesian companies that were listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2012. The list was published on Tuesday (09/07) in Jakarta. The company that is leading Fortune's ranking is Astra International, one of the largest diversified conglomerates in Indonesia. Astra is not only the most profitable (net profit) company that is listed on the IDX but also the leading company in terms of highest revenue.

    Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa (Indocement), Indonesia's second largest cement producer in terms of market share, has 12 cement plants that are spread across West Java and South Kalimantan. Its Citeureup factory in Bogor (West Java) is currently one of the largest cement factories in the world with an annual installed production capacity of 11.9 million tons of cement. As Indonesia's cement industry has been growing rapidly, along with the country's economic growth, Indocement is busy expanding its operations.
