Indonesia’s inflation rate was a bit on the mild side in the first month of 2023. The country’s Statistical Agency (in Indonesian: Badan Pusat Statistik, or BPS) reported that Indonesian inflation reached 0.34 percent month-on-month (m/m) in January 2023, which is a bit lower than the historical average in the month of January.
Indonesia ended 2022 with a modest increase in inflationary pressures. Indonesia’s Statistical Agency (or BPS) announced that December 2022 inflation reached 0.66 percent month-on-month (m/m), higher than our forecast of around 0.50 percent.
Again, we were surprised by the low level of inflation in Indonesia. While usually we see rising inflationary pressures in the month of November (ahead of the peak in the December-January period), this time it was a different story.
In line with expectations, Indonesian inflation accelerated well beyond 1.0 percent month-on-month (m/m) in September 2022 after the government raised prices of subsidized fuels (Pertalite, Pertamax and diesel oil) on 3 September 2022.
Contrary to our expectations, Indonesia’s headline inflation showed some relatively steep deflation in August 2022. This was a sort of relief as we had seen five straight months of rapidly rising inflation in Indonesia between March and July 2022.
In line with our expectations, Indonesia’s headline inflation rate approached the 5.0 percent year-on-year (y/y) mark in July 2022 as Indonesia’s Statistical Office (BPS) determined inflation at 0.64 percent month-on-month (m/m) in July 2022.
Indonesian markets are back open after the week-long Idul Fitri holiday. And, it was not the greatest opening, with Indonesian stocks, bonds, and the rupiah under heavy pressure. Moreover, Indonesian inflation accelerated quite rapidly in April 2022.
Last month we started our inflation update stating that “the global threat of inflation has not reached Indonesia yet”. One month later, it now seems that a high inflation cycle has arrived in Indonesia; one that may continue in the next couple of months.
To be honest, we were surprised to see deflation in Indonesia in September 2021 as we expected sliding new COVID-19 cases and the government’s relaxation of social and business restrictions (PPKM) on Java and Bali to give a slight boost to demand.
As expected, Indonesia posted very mild inflation in August 2021 amid the country’s (continued) social and business restrictions (PPKM) that disrupt demand across the economic centers on Java and Bali.

Today (02/06), Statistics Indonesia released various important economic data that provide more insight into the state of the Indonesian economy. Two of these indicators - inflation and trade - are discussed in this column. Head of Statistics Indonesia Suryamin announced that inflation in May 2014 rose by 0.16 percent (slightly higher than previously expected), while the April 2014 trade balance of Indonesia recorded a USD $1.96 billion deficit. These data were not well received by the market, evidenced by sharp rupiah depreciation.
The inflation rate of Indonesia rose slightly in November 2013 (month-to-month) and confirms estimations that inflation in Southeast Asia's largest economy is under control after having accelerated sharply due to the introduction of higher subsidized fuel prices June 2013. In recent months, inflation moved sideways and is expected to ease considerably in the first quarter of 2014. Indonesia's consumer price index rose 0.12 percent in November due to rising electricity, processed foods and health care costs.
