On Thursday (7.10.2021) Indonesia Investments released its September 2021 report. This report discusses a range of subjects - related to political developments, the economy and social matters - that were influential in Indonesia in the month of September 2021.
The central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) showed that it is willing to lend a helping hand to try and boost Indonesia’s economic growth by cutting its benchmark interest rate again. On 19 September 2019 – the last day of its two-day monthly policy meeting – Bank Indonesia cut its BI 7-day reverse repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.25 percent, while the deposit facility and lending facility rates were lowered (by 25 bps) to 4.50 percent and 6.00 percent, respectively.
At July's two-day monetary policy meeting (held on 17-18 July 2019), the central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) surprised us by deciding to cut the benchmark BI 7-day Reverse Repo Rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 5.75 percent. Meanwhile, the deposit facility and lending facility rates were lowered - also by 25 bps - to 5.00 percent and 6.50 percent, respectively.

It is important to put Indonesia into international context because decisions that are made by Indonesian policymakers are (partly) based on global developments.
The Indonesian rupiah made a stable performance against the US dollar in February 2019. The benchmark JISDOR rate of Bank Indonesia ended the second month of the year at the position of IDR 14,062 per US dollar, appreciating modestly from the level of IDR 14,072 per US dollar at the last trading day of January 2019.
In line with our estimates the central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) left its interest rates unchanged at the January policy meeting that was held on 16-17 January 2019. The benchmark BI 7-Day Reverse Repo Rate was held at 6.00 percent, while the deposit facility and lending facility rates were kept at 5.25 percent and 6.75 percent, respectively.
In the month of December 2018 the Indonesian rupiah weakened 0.99 percent from IDR 14,339 per US dollar on the last trading day of November 2018 to IDR 14,481 per US dollar on the last trading day of December 2018 (based on Bank Indonesia’s benchmark JISDOR rate).

Despite negative influence of stock markets in America, Europe and China, the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG) managed to record a gain. During Friday's intraday trade, Indonesia's main indicator moved flat. However, stimulus from indices in Japan, Australia and Singapore, made it rise. Foreigners continued to buy Indonesian assets, while various companies reported good corporate results (such as Bank Rakyat Indonesia, Bank Danamon, Bank Cimb Niaga, Hero Supermarket).
Despite a good opening, weakening Asian stock markets dragged the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IHSG) downwards in today's trading day. At the start of the day, market participants may have hoped that Indonesia's main indicator would gain again, but a low trade volume turned it negative. Moreover, investors seem to wait for the result of Bumi Plc's shareholders meeting, and the negative opening of European stock indices contributed to the decline.
