  • Growth of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Indonesia Slows in Q2-2016

    Direct investment in Indonesia (both domestic and foreign) totaled IDR 298.1 trillion in the first half of 2016, up 14.8 percent from investment realization in the same period one year earlier. Foreign direct investment (FDI) was recorded at IDR 195.5 trillion¹, up 12.3 percent (y/y) - and accounting for 65.6 percent of total investment realization in the first six months of 2016 - while domestic direct investment (DDI) rose 20.0 percent (y/y) over the same period. On a quarter-to-quarter basis, FDI into Indonesia rose 7.9 percent, considerably lower than the 17.1 percent (q/q) growth pace in the preceding quarter.

  • Opening Foreign Investment in Indonesia: E-Commerce Industry

    Soon foreign investors will be allowed to control a full 100 percent stake in electronic commerce (e-commerce) businesses in Indonesia. Currently, the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) is completing a new regulation that streamlines the latest regulatory changes in this industry (this regulation is expected to be completed in June 2016). Earlier this year, Indonesian President Joko Widodo signed a decree that opens (more wider) foreign ownership in various industries, including Indonesia's e-commerce industry.

  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Indonesia Rises in Q1-2016

    In rupiah terms, foreign direct investment (FDI) into Indonesia in the first quarter of 2016 grew 17.1 percent year-on-year (y/y) to IDR 96.1 trillion according to the latest data from the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). Meanwhile, in US dollar terms FDI in Q1-2016 rose 4.5 percent (y/y) to USD $6.9 billion (using the IDR 13,900 per USD exchange rate set in the 2016 state budget). Due to the volatile rupiah rate, Indonesia's FDI always tends to be somewhat distorted when comparing these data in different currencies or in different time intervals.

  • Chinese Furniture Companies Want to Relocate to Indonesia?

    According to Franky Sibarani, Head of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), around 200 Chinese furniture companies have expressed their interest to relocate their factories to Indonesia because operational costs in China have been rising sharply in recent years, particularly wages. Moreover, rattan (an important material for furniture) is readily available in Indonesia. Sibarani said the changing structure of the Chinese economy (shifting from investment and export-driven to consumption) is why many Chinese manufacturing companies want to relocate their companies abroad.

  • Foreign Direct Investment into Indonesia Grows 19.2% in 2015

    In rupiah terms, foreign direct investment (FDI) into Indonesia increased by 19.2 percent year-on-year (y/y) to IDR 365.9 trillion in 2015, according to the latest data from the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). The BKPM, the central government's investment services agency, said FDI was strong in the fourth quarter of 2015 - rising 26 percent (y/y) - on the back of the government's recently unveiled series of economic stimulus packages.

  • Negative Investment List of Indonesia to Be Revised

    The Indonesian government announced it plans to allow 100 percent foreign ownership of cold storage businesses, sugar factories, rubber manufacturing companies, and the e-commerce business by revising Presidential Regulation No. 39/2014 on the Negative Investment List. The Negative Investment List (in Indonesian: Daftar Negatif Investasi) lists the sectors that are either fully or partially closed to foreign investment. Meanwhile, the government is studying whether other sectors can also be opened (or opened up wider) to foreign investors.

  • Indonesia's Investment Agency Targets 15% Investment Growth in 2016

    The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the central government's investment services agency, targets to see a 15 percent growth to IDR 594.8 trillion (approx. USD $43 billion) in investment realization in 2016 supported by an improving investment climate in Southeast Asia's largest economy.     The food sector is one of the sectors within Indonesia's manufacturing industry that continues to lure foreign investors. This statement is based on the latest report of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the investment services agency of the Indonesian government, released in late December. The agency notes that applications by investors for principle licenses in the food sector in the period 1 January to 28 December 2015 were worth a total of IDR 184.9 trillion (approx.     The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the central government's investment service agency, said foreign direct investment (FDI) is projected to account for 65 percent - or IDR 386.6 trillion (approx. USD $28.2 billion) - of total direct investment in Indonesia in 2016. The BKPM sees domestic direct investment realization next year at IDR 208.4 trillion. As such, in total, direct investment realization in Indonesia is estimated at IDR 594.8 trillion (approx. USD $43.4 billion) in 2016.

  • Indonesia Received Record Amount of Direct Investments in 2013

    On Tuesday (21/01), the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) announced that investments in Indonesia grew 27 percent to IDR 398.6 trillion (USD $33 billion) in 2013, thus exceeding the target that was set at the start of the year (IDR 390 trillion). This result, which is a new record high for Southeast Asia's largest economy, was supported by a 39 percent increase in domestic direct investment (IDR 128.2 trillion) and a 22 percent increase in foreign direct investment (IDR 272.6 trillion).

  • Indonesia Most Popular Investment Destination for Japanese Expansion

    According to a survey of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), 44.9 percent of respondents assessed Indonesia as the most promising investment destination for the next three years. The respondents in this survey involved 500 Japanese companies that engage in international businesses. For Indonesia it is the first time in 21 years that it forms the preferred choice of overseas investments for Japanese companies, thus replacing China. In 2013, Japan already dominates foreign direct investment in Indonesia.

  • UK Business Confidence in Indonesia Subdued Amid Economic Challenges

    A survey released by The British Chamber of Commerce Indonesia (BritCham) showed that United Kingdom (UK) investors’ confidence on doing business in Indonesia in 2013 and 2014 dropped but is still positive overall. One hundred corporate and other members of BritCham, 95% of whom hold Senior Management posts, participated in this survey. The survey showed that 60% of the total respondents remained confident about their business in Indonesia, down from 83% in 2012, while the Ease of Doing Business score fell by 15% from 65% to 50%.

  • Investment Growth in Indonesia Continues to Slow in Third Quarter 2013

    The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) said that total realized investments in Indonesia in the third quarter of 2013 was recorded at IDR 100.5 trillion (USD $8.89 billion). Of this total figure, IDR 67.0 trillion (USD $5.93 billion) was accounted for by foreign direct investment (FDI), while the remainder (IDR 33.5 trillion) was classified as domestic direct investment (DDI). The total investment realization of IDR 100.5 trillion was the highest ever quarterly investment figure since the BKPM releases these quarterly results.

    After China and India, Indonesia is currently the third most important investment destination for Japanese investments in the manufacturing sector.     Last week, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (IHSG) climbed 7.3 percent to end at 4,375.53 on Friday (13/09). This growth is remarkable as it remains unknown what the Federal Reserve will do with its quantitative easing program (QE3).   • Investments in Indonesia Continue to Slow; Government Revises Target

    Growth of Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) in Indonesia has continued to slow down in the first six months of 2013. In the first quarter of 2013, GFCF rose 5.78 percent but in the second quarter the pace fell to 4.67 percent. These results are much lower than last year's quarterly growth rates as can be seen in the table below. In fact, the growth rate in Q2-2013 constitutes the lowest growth rate in the last 13 quarters. In Q2-2013, all sectors experienced weakening investments except for domestic machinery and equipment.

  • Investment Realization in Indonesia USD $19.8 billion in Semester I-2013

    Investment realization in Indonesia grew 30.2 percent to IDR 192.8 trillion (USD $19.8 billion) in the first six months of 2013 (compared to the same period last year). This result implies that 49.4 percent of the investment target for full 2013 has been achieved. The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) aims to collect IDR 390.3 trillion in investments this year.   • The Rising Property Market of Indonesia: Is the Sky the Limit?

    One of the sectors that showed exceptional growth in 2012 was Indonesia's property market. On average, net profit of companies engaged in Indonesia's property sector grew 68 percent during the full year. Of the 45 property companies that are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), 26 posted net profit growth that exceeded 50 percent. But the success story did not end there.     In Quarter I 2013 (January-March), total investment in Indonesia increased 30.6 percent to IDR 93.0 trillion (US $9.58 billion) compared to the same period in 2012 according to data from the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal, abbreviated BKPM), a government institution. Of this total amount, about seventy percent is accounted for by foreign direct investment, while the remaining thirty percent constitutes domestic direct investment.
