  • Singapore Largest Foreign Investor in Indonesia in the First Half of 2014

    According to the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Singapore is the largest foreign investor in Indonesia. In the first half of 2014, Indonesia received USD $3.4 billion worth of investments from Singapore. In total, foreign companies invested IDR 150 trillion (USD $12.9 billion) in Indonesia during the first six months of 2014. This is the highest amount of foreign investment that Indonesia has ever managed to attract in a six-month period. It also diluted fears that the legislative and presidential elections would cause a temporary slowdown.

  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Indonesia Hits New Record in Q2-2014

    According to data from the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), total investment realization in Indonesia grew 16.4 percent (year-on-year) in the second quarter of 2014 to IDR 116.2 trillion (USD $10.0 billion), the highest ever quarterly investment result and thus proved that Indonesia’s legislative and presidential elections in 2014 were no reason to postpone direct investments. Foreign direct investment (FDI) was recorded at IDR 78.0 trillion (USD $6.7 billion), while domestic direct investment (DDI) was IDR 38.2 trillion (USD $3.3 billion).

  • BKPM Optimistic about Q2-2014 Investment Realization in Indonesia

    The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the investment service agency of the Indonesian government, is optimistic that investment realization in Indonesia (Southeast Asia’s largest economy) can surpass the level of IDR $100 trillion (USD $8.5 billion) in the second semester of 2014. Sectors that see increased investments in this quarter are the consumer goods and mining sectors. Total investments in Indonesia in the first quarter of 2014 reached IDR 106.6 trillion, an all-time record high quarterly investment realization.

  • Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board Optimistic on Investment in 2014

    The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) is optimistic that investments (both foreign and domestic direct investments) in Indonesia can reach IDR 450 trillion (USD $38.1 billion) in 2014. This would be a 15 percentage point increase from investment realization in 2013. Head of BKPM Mahendra Siregar said that there is no evidence yet which indicates that investors are hesitant to invest due to the presidential election (scheduled for 9 July 2014). In the first quarter of 2014, investment realization in Indonesia had set a new record.

  • Revision of Indonesia's Negative Investment List to Attract Investment

    Chairman of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Mahendra Siregar said on Thursday (24/04) that Indonesia's Negative Investment List (Daftar Negatif Investasi), which stipulates which sectors in the Indonesian economy are open to foreign investment as well as the percentage of foreign ownership permitted, has been revised. The list was revised through a Presidential Decree earlier this week. The revision means that the limit of foreign ownership in several sectors will be raised.

  • Indonesian Government Tenders Construction of Oil Refinery Project

    The government of Indonesia will tender a crude oil refinery construction project in mid April 2014. The oil refinery will be located in Bontang (East Kalimantan) and the project is based on the public-private partnership (PPP) scheme. Susilo Siswoutomo, Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, said that the government is currently engaged in formulating procedures for submission of the tender bid. The Finance Ministry and Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) are also involved in formulating the terms of reference.

  • Muhammad Lutfi Replaces Gita Wirjawan as Indonesia's Trade Minister

    Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will officially appoint Muhammad Lutfi as the new Trade Minister on Friday (14/02), thus replacing Gita Wirjawan who requested to step down as Trade Minister on 31 January 2014 in order to focus solely on his presidential bid. Muhammad Lutfi will only have eight months time to head the Trade Ministry because a new Indonesian government will be inaugurated in October (legislative and presidential elections are scheduled for April and July 2014).

  • BKPM: Japan Replaced Singapore as Biggest Investor in Indonesia in 2013

    Mahendra Siregar, Chairman of the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) said that Japan has replaced Singapore as the largest investor in Indonesia. In 2013, Japan invested USD $4.7 billion in Southeast Asia's largest economy, particularly in the automotive sector due to the sector's promising outlook as demand for cars among Indonesia's expanding middle class grows strongly. Singapore, which was the largest investor in Indonesia between 2010 and 2012, fell to second place with USD $4.6 billion worth of investments.

  • Larger Share of Foreign Ownership in Indonesia's Infrastructure Projects

    The Indonesian government wants to enlarge the role of foreign participation in the country's infrastructure development. Through a proposed revision of Presidential Regulation No 36/2010 regarding the Negative Investment List (Daftar Negatif Investasi), foreign investors will have more room for investing in Indonesia's infrastructure sector within public-private partnership schemes (PPP projects). The Indonesian government needs more foreign participation as the current state of the country's infrastructure is inadequate.

    The government of Indonesia announced on Tuesday (24/12) that increased levels of foreign direct investments will be allowed in the country’s airports, pharmaceutical industries, power plants, and toll roads. The revision of Indonesia's Negative Investment List (Daftar Negatif Investasi), the list which stipulates which sectors are closed (or partly closed) to foreign investment, is conducted in order to attract more foreign investments from abroad as a means to combat slowing economic growth in Southeast Asia's largest economy.

  • Indonesia Received Record Amount of Direct Investments in 2013

    On Tuesday (21/01), the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) announced that investments in Indonesia grew 27 percent to IDR 398.6 trillion (USD $33 billion) in 2013, thus exceeding the target that was set at the start of the year (IDR 390 trillion). This result, which is a new record high for Southeast Asia's largest economy, was supported by a 39 percent increase in domestic direct investment (IDR 128.2 trillion) and a 22 percent increase in foreign direct investment (IDR 272.6 trillion).

  • Indonesia Most Popular Investment Destination for Japanese Expansion

    According to a survey of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), 44.9 percent of respondents assessed Indonesia as the most promising investment destination for the next three years. The respondents in this survey involved 500 Japanese companies that engage in international businesses. For Indonesia it is the first time in 21 years that it forms the preferred choice of overseas investments for Japanese companies, thus replacing China. In 2013, Japan already dominates foreign direct investment in Indonesia.

  • UK Business Confidence in Indonesia Subdued Amid Economic Challenges

    A survey released by The British Chamber of Commerce Indonesia (BritCham) showed that United Kingdom (UK) investors’ confidence on doing business in Indonesia in 2013 and 2014 dropped but is still positive overall. One hundred corporate and other members of BritCham, 95% of whom hold Senior Management posts, participated in this survey. The survey showed that 60% of the total respondents remained confident about their business in Indonesia, down from 83% in 2012, while the Ease of Doing Business score fell by 15% from 65% to 50%.

  • Investment Growth in Indonesia Continues to Slow in Third Quarter 2013

    The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) said that total realized investments in Indonesia in the third quarter of 2013 was recorded at IDR 100.5 trillion (USD $8.89 billion). Of this total figure, IDR 67.0 trillion (USD $5.93 billion) was accounted for by foreign direct investment (FDI), while the remainder (IDR 33.5 trillion) was classified as domestic direct investment (DDI). The total investment realization of IDR 100.5 trillion was the highest ever quarterly investment figure since the BKPM releases these quarterly results.

    After China and India, Indonesia is currently the third most important investment destination for Japanese investments in the manufacturing sector. In 2011, Indonesia - Southeast Asia's largest economy - was still ranked number five on that list. However, in recent years the country managed to surpass Thailand and Vietnam.     Last week, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (IHSG) climbed 7.3 percent to end at 4,375.53 on Friday (13/09). This growth is remarkable as it remains unknown what the Federal Reserve will do with its quantitative easing program (QE3). The next Fed meeting - scheduled for 17-18 September - is expected to provide more clarity regarding this matter.   • Investments in Indonesia Continue to Slow; Government Revises Target

    Growth of Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) in Indonesia has continued to slow down in the first six months of 2013. In the first quarter of 2013, GFCF rose 5.78 percent but in the second quarter the pace fell to 4.67 percent. These results are much lower than last year's quarterly growth rates as can be seen in the table below. In fact, the growth rate in Q2-2013 constitutes the lowest growth rate in the last 13 quarters. In Q2-2013, all sectors experienced weakening investments except for domestic machinery and equipment.

  • Investment Realization in Indonesia USD $19.8 billion in Semester I-2013

    Investment realization in Indonesia grew 30.2 percent to IDR 192.8 trillion (USD $19.8 billion) in the first six months of 2013 (compared to the same period last year). This result implies that 49.4 percent of the investment target for full 2013 has been achieved. The Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) aims to collect IDR 390.3 trillion in investments this year. This target is divided in domestic direct investment (DDI) of IDR 117.7 trillion and foreign direct investment (FDI) of IDR 272.6 trillion.

  • The Rising Property Market of Indonesia: Is the Sky the Limit?

    One of the sectors that showed exceptional growth in 2012 was Indonesia's property market. On average, net profit of companies engaged in Indonesia's property sector grew 68 percent during the full year. Of the 45 property companies that are listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), 26 posted net profit growth that exceeded 50 percent. But the success story did not end there.   • Domestic and Foreign Direct Investment in Indonesia Grows Strong in Q1-2013

    In Quarter I 2013 (January-March), total investment in Indonesia increased 30.6 percent to IDR 93.0 trillion (US $9.58 billion) compared to the same period in 2012 according to data from the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal, abbreviated BKPM), a government institution. Of this total amount, about seventy percent is accounted for by foreign direct investment, while the remaining thirty percent constitutes domestic direct investment.
