This constitutes a sharp rise compared to last year's result of 3.8 million passengers. The airline, which handles 140 flights per day to 22 Indonesian cities, expects the increase to be in line with the growth of its armada to 29 aircrafts in 2013 (including 22 new Airbus A320 planes). Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia's national airline, is planning to sell bonds worth IDR 2 trillion (US $205.1 million) in Quarter II - 2013. The bonds, which are denominated in IDR rupiah, will have a five-year maturity. Proceeds of the bond issuance will be used by the company for capital expenditure (capex), which includes investments in aircrafts and working capital. The airline is currently searching for a lead underwriter through a tender.

Garuda Indonesia (GIAA), one of Indonesia's biggest airlines, posted a 100 percent increase in net profit to US $145.4 million in 2012 from US $72.7 million a year earlier. Operating profit of the company rose 82 percent to US $110.8 million from US $64.2 million in 2011. The Indonesian government changed the funding scheme for the construction of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Railway project (which will connect Soekarno Hatta International Airport, located nearby Jakarta, and Halim Airport in Jakarta). The number of air passengers in Indonesia will most likely fail to meet its growth target in 2014. Based on government data, the number of air passengers in Southeast Asia’s largest economy reached 47.5 million in the first eight months of 2014, a 5.82 percentage point growth from the same period last year. The prequalification tender for the construction of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport Railway project has been postponed until late October 2014 (from August) as agreements with several stakeholders still need to be finalized. For example, the government is yet to underwrite part of the required investment. On Friday 10 January 2014, the government of Indonesia opened Halim Airport for scheduled commercial flights. Previously, the only airport that served these types of flights around Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta and surrounding towns was the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Soetta), located in Cengkareng (Banten). However, the amount of daily passengers at Soetta has exceeded its capacity. Based on data from Airports Council International, released in 2013, Soetta is the world's tenth busiest airport.
