• Relief Rally in Asia after Fed Leaves Interest Rates Unchanged

    After the US Federal Reserve decided to leave its interest rates unchanged at the September policy meeting on Wednesday (21/09) Asian stocks surged while emerging market currencies appreciated against the US dollar. Indonesia's benchmark Jakarta Composite Index had surged 1 percent by 11:30 am local Jakarta time, while the Indonesian rupiah had appreciated 0.38 percent to IDR 13,087 per US dollar (Bloomberg Dollar Index). A delay in US monetary tightening makes the higher yielding (but riskier) emerging markets assets an attractive alternative.

  • IPO News Indonesia: Waskita Toll Road to List in 2017?

    Indonesian state-controlled contractor Waskita Karya is also eager to see its subsidiary Waskita Toll Road conducting an initial public offering on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. On Tuesday (20/09) another unit of Waskita Karya - Waskita Beton Precast - was listed on the local bourse, raising IDR 5.16 trillion (approx. USD $394 million) hence becoming the biggest IPO in Indonesia so far this year. This year there have been few companies eager to list considering the highly volatile markets amid the weak global economy and ahead of another Fed Fund Rate hike.

    Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati was at a court hearing in Jakarta on Tuesday (20/09) to defend the legality of the nation's tax amnesty program. In July 2016 legal activists, gathered within the One Justice Foundation (Yayasan Satu Keadilan) and Indonesian People's Struggle Union (Serikat Perjuangan Rakyat Indonesia), filed for a judicial review at the Constitutional Court claiming that the program turns money laundering into a legal practice, protects criminals, teaches Indonesian citizens not to pay taxes, and constitutes an unfair program from a social point of view.
