  • Indonesia May Impose Excise Tax on Plastic Bottles & Packaging

    The government of Indonesia proposes to impose an excise tax of at least IDR 200 (approx. USD $0.02) on plastic bottles and packaging. This proposal is part of talks about revisions to the 2016 State Budget (APNB-P 2016). Later this week, the government will discuss the matter with Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR). Around the globe several countries (including Great Britain and India) have imposed such an excise tax on plastic bottles and packages, both for additional tax revenue and as a measure to protect the environment.

  • Asian Stocks Strong on China's Trade Data, Weaker Yen & Oil Outlook

    Most stocks in Asia were higher on Wednesday (13/04) supported by positive trade data from China and heightened expectation of an "oil output freeze deal" at the OPEC meeting coming Sunday in Doha. Indonesia's benchmark Jakarta Composite Index rose 0.49 percent to 4,853.00 points, a modest result compared with Japan's Nikkei 225 Index (+2.84 percent), Singapore's Strait Times Index (+2.69 percent), and China's Shanghai Composite Index (+1.42 percent).

  • Coal Mining News: Peabody Energy Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

    The world's number one privately-owned coal producer, US-based Peabody Energy Corp, filed for bankruptcy protection on Wednesday (13/04) after its debt burden became too high amid recent expansion efforts, a cancelled asset sale, and slumping coal prices. All of the miner's offices and mines will continue operations as usual during the bankruptcy process. The case of Peabody Energy is one of the world's largest ever bankruptcy cases in the commodities sector. Trading of Peabody Energy's shares has been suspended immediately.

  • Land Reclamation Indonesia: Jakarta's Artificial Islands Cause Controversy

    According to local media, Commission IV of Indonesia's House of Representatives and the central Indonesian government agree to temporarily suspend development of the land reclamation project off the coast of North Jakarta as seven violations of Indonesian law occurred during the process. Authorities want to undertake a more thorough study before construction continues. Herman Khaeron, Vice Chairman of Commission IV, claims Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (better known as Ahok) has issued construction permits too soon without having a legal basis. Earlier, a corruption case related to this mega-project had made headlines.
