Jakarta; the Sinking, Choking Metropolitan Capital City of Indonesia
It was reported in media around the globe near the end of July 2019 that Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta has been constantly ranked in the top 10 of the world's most polluted cities over the past two months (based on AirVisual’s World Air Quality Index, AQI). And, for several days in July 2019 this mega-city was even ranked as the world's smoggiest city.
Having been living in Jakarta for more than six years now, my number one complaint about this monstrous city is the severe traffic congestion. Millions of cars and motorcycles clog the streets of Jakarta, every day. Infrastructure development has not been able to keep up with the pace of car and motorcycles sales, the pace of growing economic activity, and the massive number of newcomers who migrate to Jakarta in search of a livelihood, each year. In fact, infrastructure development lost this battle many years ago already.
