Gelar Batik Nusantara 2015: Indonesian Batik Popular in the USA
According to Indonesia’s state news agency Antara, the United States (US) have become the largest export destination for Indonesian batik. Approximately 37 percent of Indonesia’s total batik export is shipped to the US, the world’s largest economy. Batik is a traditional textile produced by using a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to cloth. Although several other countries also produce batik, the most well-known batik originates from the island of Java (batik was recognized as a World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO in 2009).
Nus Nuzulia Isaac, Director General of National Export Development at the Indonesian Trade Ministry, said that the USA is currently the most important export market for Indonesian batik, followed by South Korea, Japan, Germany, Britain and the Netherlands. He added that the value of Indonesian batik exports have grown from USD $22 million in 2010 to USD $340 million in 2014. In the first four months of 2015 Indonesian batik exports were worth USD $81.8 million.
The Indonesian Trade Ministry has high hopes for batik as it targets to see a 300 percentage point growth in value of batik exports over the next five years to USD $1.5 billion.
Today (24/06), Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla opened the "Gelar Batik Nusantara 2015" exhibition at the Jakarta Convention Center. This event, organized by the Indonesian Batik Foundation and Mediatama Binakreasi, will be held from 24 to 28 June with the theme, "Batik Uniting Nations" and showcases thousands of coastal batik. The expo is expected to open market opportunities for Indonesian batik producers and attract investors to further develop batik as an international product.
