Geopolitics & Geoeconomics - Indonesia Becomes Full Member of BRICS Bloc
On Monday 6 January 2025, it was announced by Brazil - which currently holds Chairmanship - that Indonesia has officially become a full member of the BRICS bloc, an intergovernmental organization that is considered an alternative to the G7 bloc.
Being admitted into the BRICS bloc is a sign that existing members (which include China, India and Russia) have high confidence in the benefits that Indonesia can bring to the bloc. After all, Indonesia is home to a huge population (around 285 million people) - which is a true consumer force - and has a thriving domestic economy, while the smooth transition to the administration of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto (which sort of extends the programs and ambitions fostered by his predecessor) is evidence of a stable political situation in Southeast Asia's biggest economy.
Through the membership of Indonesia, the BRICS bloc indeed also managed to penetrate Southeast Asia for the first time.
Meanwhile, Indonesia can also expect to see advantages from becoming a member of the BRICS bloc. By becoming a member, Indonesia should get better access to new technology and investment (originating from other BRICS members), while it should also be able to tap the potential of non-traditional export markets (such as South Africa and the Middle East). This could add 0.3 percent to Indonesia's annual gross domestic product (GDP).
However, considering we have seen rising geopolitical tensions around the world (which could grow further once US President Donald Trump is back in office for another four-year term starting from January 2025), Indonesia also needs to remain careful in terms of international diplomacy as the BRICS bloc is considered a threat to Western interests.
Indonesia Investments will release an in-depth article about Indonesia's membership in the BRICS bloc in our January 2025 report.
