What do we discuss in this July 2024 edition?

Firstly, we zoom in on rice. Rice plays a significant social and economic role in Indonesia. In fact, it even plays a role on the political agenda (and in other Asian countries) as it is the key staple food for the population, particularly for the poorer segments of society. For many decades the Indonesian government has been aiming for rice self-sufficiency (albeit rarely achieved this).

Meanwhile, the second topic - poverty - is actually related to rice as the country's poor and near-poor spend a significant portion of their disposable incomes on the purchase of rice. And so, an increase in the price of rice can easily push millions of near-poor into full-blown poverty. In this article we present an in-depth analysis of poverty in Indonesia, both rural and urban poverty, as well as income distribution inequality.

Another topic that is discussed in detail in this report is electricity production and consumption across Indonesia. For social and economic development it is vital that the Indonesian government manages to supply electricity to all corners of the country. However, there are various challenges that need to be overcome.

Fourth, we devote an article on the topic of Indonesia's economic growth. As usual, we base this analysis on a selection of important macroeconomic indicators.

For a full list of topics discussed, you can take a look at the table of contents in the link below.
