Quest for Clean Energy in Indonesia; What About Development of Renewable Energy in 2024?
In December 2024, Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources released a statement in which it said that renewable energy accounts for 13.93 percent of the national energy mix. Meanwhile, the ministry hopes this percentage can touch 14.1 percent by the end of 2024 especially supported by geothermal power development.
Several geothermal power projects that are expected to become operational before the end of 2024 are:
(1) The Sorik Marapi Geothermal Power Plant (41 Megawatt, or MW) in North Sumatra;
(2) The Salak Binary Geothermal Power Plant (15 MW) in West Java; and
(3) The Ijen Geothermal Power Plant (45 MW) in East Java.
In the case of (2) and (3), it remains waiting for the Environmental Impact Analysis (locally known as Amdal), a document that can be difficult to get in red tape-ridden Indonesia.
If renewable energy, indeed, contributed 14.1 percent to Indonesia’s energy mix by the end of 2024, it means that the central government’s earlier target was undershot heavily (which is actually fully in line with expectations). Earlier, Indonesia targeted renewable energy to supply 17.9 percent of the energy mix by the end of 2024.
Contribution of Renewable Energy to Indonesia’s Power Mix
It also means that the government’s target of renewable energy supplying (at least) 23 percent to the nation’s energy mix by the end of 2025 will basically be impossible to achieve. This also leads to doubts whether Indonesia can become carbon neutral – as targeted – by 2060.
Eniya Listiyani Dewi, who is Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said in a press release that Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto remains highly focused on raising the proportion of renewable energy in the national energy mix.
Dewi added that the potential for geothermal power is still very large in Indonesia and forms a “low hanging fruit” to achieve more renewable power, apart from solar power plants that the ministry continues to push. Based on her words, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources prioritizes the development of geothermal power plants, solar power (floating and rooftop), as well as hydro and wind power plants in the period ahead.
