The central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia) announced on Friday (08.03.2019) that the country's foreign exchange reserves grew USD $3.2 billion to reach the level of USD $123.3 billion at the end of February 2019 (the highest level since May 2018). Rising foreign exchange assets is a positive trend and gives Bank Indonesia more ammunition to combat volatility in the (still vulnerable) rupiah exchange rate.
In line with expectations, Indonesia's foreign exchange reserves continued to decline for the sixth consecutive month. Per late-July 2018 the country's foreign exchange reserves amounted to USD $118.3 billion, down from the level of USD $119.8 billion one month earlier.

Despite stable domestic conditions, Bank Indonesia sees risks: contagion risk stemming from US monetary tightening and possible higher subsidized fuel prices.
The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate continued its good performance on Friday (07/03) as it had appreciated 0.49 percent to IDR 11,425 per US dollar at 14:22 local Jakarta time based on the Bloomberg Dollar Index. The currency rose for a fifth consecutive week. Main reasons for this good performance are the improving global economy as well as the improving economy of Indonesia. Foreign funds are again entering Indonesia as investors have renewed confidence in Southeast Asia's largest economy.
Contrary to most Asian indices, Indonesia's Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) managed to post a gain on Thursday (07/11). The IHSG seemed to follow the upward movement of Wall Street on the previous day (06/11) after a number of Federal Reserve officials stated to support the continuation of the Fed's monthly USD $85 billion bond-buying program (quantitative easing). Despite continued foreign net selling, the IHSG index rose 0.82 percent to 4,486.11 points as domestic purchases offset foreign selling.
Bank Indonesia’s Board of Governors decided to hold the BI Rate at a level of 7.25 percent, with rates on the Lending Facility and Deposit Facility held respectively at 7.25 percent and 5.50 percent. Bank Indonesia will continue to monitor global and domestic developments and further synergise the monetary and macroprudential policy mix in order to ensure that inflationary pressures remain under control, that rupiah exchange rate stability is maintained according to its fundamentals and the current account deficit is reduced to a sustainable level.
Last week, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (IHSG) climbed 7.3 percent to end at 4,375.53 on Friday (13/09). This growth is remarkable as it remains unknown what the Federal Reserve will do with its quantitative easing program (QE3). The next Fed meeting - scheduled for 17-18 September - is expected to provide more clarity regarding this matter. Positive sentiments that lifted the IHSG were Indonesia's slightly increased foreign exchange reserves, its stable rupiah after another BI rate hike, and the Bilateral Swap Deals (BSA) with Japan and China.
The release of positive economic data in China at the end of last week were continued into this week and had a good impact on regional stock indices. Most Asian stock indices continued their upward movement. This time, Indonesia's benchmark stock index (IHSG) was able to join its regional peers. Although Indonesia's investment climate is still not conducive, foreign investors were back buying more Indonesian stocks than they sold. The index rose 2.92 percent to 4,191.26 points on Monday (09/09).
