The price of gold remains above the level of USD $1,250 per troy ounce amid the negative sentiments that have depressed the US dollar as the market is in wait & see mode ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting on July 25-26, 2017.
Indonesian gold miner Agincourt Resources plans to conduct an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2017. The gold miner operates the Martabe Gold Mine in North Sumatra through a Contract of Work. Agincourt Resources is for 61.4 percent owned by Australia-based EMR Capital, a private equity manager that is specialized in mining resources and has deep linkages to Asian markets. Although the IDX refrained from mentioning names, it confirmed that at least one miner will IPO in Indonesia in 2017.
Eight commodity prices have been rising steadily so far this year on higher global demand. This rebound is expected to continue into 2017 although it will require a long time to touch the levels that we saw in 2011. The World Bank noted in a report released on 4 October 2016 that the prices of eight commodities - coal, crude oil, crude palm oil, copper, iron ore, tin, nickel and gold - have been rebounding so far this year. Rising commodity prices will support economic growth of Indonesia as Southeast Asia's largest economy is one of the world's largest commodity exporters.
Indonesia's state bonds are expected to remain a popular investment instrument in the second quarter of 2016 - perhaps even the most popular instrument - due to stable and more attractive yields compared to other investment instruments. Although the Indonesian rupiah and the benchmark stock index (Jakarta Composite Index) have both strengthened markedly over the past week (particularly supported by higher crude oil prices), the global economy remains plagued by uncertainties (China's economic slowdown and possible higher borrowing costs in the USA). Analysts say that in this context investor appetite for Indonesian bonds increases.
Shares of Indonesian mining company Merdeka Copper Gold rose about 15 percent on its trading debut on Friday (19/06). The company, a subsidiary of Saratoga Capital, was the sixth company to conduct an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2015. Head of Finance and Corporate Secretary Ellie Turjandi said that Merdeka’s shares had been oversubscribed nearly 40 times during the public offering (11-15 June 2015), reflecting investors’ confidence even though the company has not yet begun production.
Gold miner Archi Indonesia, unit of the Rajawali Corpora Group, decided to postpone its initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) due to the sluggish global economy resulting in the weak global gold price (which is currently touching four-year lows). Archi Indonesia’s IPO was planned to be held this December and was estimated to be the largest IPO on the IDX in 2014 in terms of capital raised (roughly USD $285 million), exceeding the value of taxi operator Blue Bird’s IPO earlier this year.
Gold miner Archi Indonesia, a subsidiary of Rajawali Corpora, expects to collect USD $200 million through an initial public offering (IPO) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) before the end of the year. The company will offer between 15 and 20 percent of its enlarged share capital to the public. It appointed two local securities firms, including Danareksa Sekuritas, and two foreign securities firms as underwriters. So far this year, 18 companies have conducted an IPO on the Indonesia Stock Exchange.
State-controlled mining company Aneka Tambang (Antam) feels the negative impact of the Indonesian government’s new mining law (Law No. 4 of 2009 on Mineral and Coal Mining) which replaced its 1967 predecessor. This new mining law is controversial because it contains a number of provisions that are negative for foreign investment in Indonesia’s mining sector. However, domestic players also feel the impact because of the mineral ore export ban, part of the mining law, which was implemented on 12 January 2014.
The Indonesian rupiah exchange rate strengthened slightly on the last trading day of the week. On Friday (08/08), Indonesia’s currency appreciated 0.15 percent to IDR 11,779 per US dollar according to the Bloomberg Dollar Index. Most Asian currencies and stocks fell, while prices of gold and oil jumped, after US President Barack Obama agreed to air strikes in northern Iraq (aimed at Sunni extremist militants). In combination with continued tensions in Ukraine as well as Gaza, investors opt for risk aversion (and profit taking).
Geopolitical tensions between Israel and Palestine as well as the Malaysia Airlines Boeing that was shot down above eastern Ukraine territory yesterday (17/07) amid hostilities between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists, have had a significant impact on global markets. Global stock indices have fallen, led by indices on Wall Street, while the US dollar and prices of gold and other precious metals appreciate as investors are in search of safe havens. The higher oil prices contribute to weaker emerging currencies.

However, its corporate earnings remained disappointing so far in 2015.
When we look at activity in the precious metals markets over the last decade, one of the biggest developing trends has been the increase in both demand and production output from emerging Asian economies. For most of this period, Indonesia has been participating with these trends - especially on the production output front. As recently as 2009, Indonesia was responsible for 130 tons worth of gold production, as mining activity becomes more efficient and increased investment resources flow into the country.
Freeport Indonesia, subsidiary of US-based natural resources company Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc, is optimistic that the Indonesian government will extend the company’s contract to operate the Grasberg mine in Papua (eastern Indonesia). This mine is the world’s largest gold mine and third-largest copper mine. The current contract between the Indonesian government and Freeport Indonesia expires in 2021. However, Freeport is currently in need of some certainty before investing a large amount on mining operations and smelting facilities.
In the fourth week of January, Bank Indonesia's rupiah exchange rate (the Jakarta Interbank Spot Dollar Rate or JISDOR) depreciated 0.41 percent against the US dollar. This weakening trend of the rupiah was caused by various factors. Most importantly, the US dollar has been gaining strength against emerging currencies, including Indonesia, as speculation emerged that the Federal Reserve will curtail its massive monthly bond-buying program (quantitative easing) by more than just USD $10 billion per month.
