On Wednesday (7/11) Indonesia Investments released the October 2018 edition of its monthly research report. The report aims to inform the reader of the key political, economic and social developments that occurred in Indonesia in the month of October 2018 and also touches upon key international developments that impacted on the Indonesian economy.
The local government of West Java said it is currently busy compiling all data related to the Lippo Group's ambitious Meikarta project. West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil said thorough investigation will then be done - based on the data - to decide whether the grand property project can resume or whether there are matters that need to be fixed.
The Lippo Group continues to aggressively promote its ambitious Meikarta project in Indonesian media and in various strategic locations. In fact, the group claims that pre-sales of apartment units has already reached 130,000 per August 2017, an impressive number. However, the project is controversial because the developer reportedly did not obtain all necessary permits and land that is required to construct the integrated township.
So far the Lippo Group only managed to acquire 16.8% of the total land that is required to develop the ambitious Meikarta township project. Meikarta is designed to become a full-fledged township, equipped with high-class and modern residential, commercial, industrial, cultural and educational centers, located on a 500-hectare plot of land 34 kilometers to the east of Jakarta, including 100 hectares of open green space, 250,000 units of prime residential property, and 1,500,000 m2 of prime commercial space.
Although in local media Indonesian property developer Lippo Cikarang is aggressively advertising its ambitious Meikarta project to the consumer, there is uncertainty whether the developer indeed collected all necessary permits required to construct the new township. Meikarta is marketed as a 500-hectare property development project with 100 hectares of open green space, 250,000 units of prime residential property, and 1,500,000 m2 of prime commercial space.

In Transparency International’s ‘Corruption Perceptions Index’ (CPI), Indonesia is rising slowly, yet continuously. In the latest edition, which was released in January 2019, Indonesia ranked 89th with a score of 38 points (the CPI uses a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is fully corrupt and 100 is completely clean).
Those consumers and investors who purchased one or more apartment units in the Meikarta megacity project in Bekasi (West Java) are currently facing uncertain times. A new corruption scandal has put the future of the Meikarta project in jeopardy and therefore those who have already bought a Meikarta apartment fear that their money and apartment unit is lost. Those who are still making monthly mortgage payments to the bank, are confused whether they need to continue these payments (hence risking losing more money) or stop the monthly payment.
One of Indonesia's biggest diversified conglomerates, the Lippo Group, topped off two apartment towers for its ambitious and controversial Meikarta megaproject on Sunday (29/10). The topping off ceremony is a sign that - despite some legal uncertainties - the project will continue as planned and not face the same fate as the land reclamation project in the bay off the coast of North Jakarta.
Indonesian Minister of Home Affairs, Tjahjo Kumolo, made a statement in support of the Lippo Group's controversial Meikarta integrated township project. At the Indonesia Future City & REI Mega Expo 2017 on Thursday (14/09) Kumolo said Indonesia's regional governments should not unnecessarily obstruct private projects that help to develop the regional economy. He cited Meikarta as an example.
Lippo Cikarang, an Indonesian property developer (part of the Lippo Group), managed to get international hotel chain operator Langham Hospitality Group on board for its ambitious Meikarta project. Meikarta is designed to become a full-fledged township some 34 kilometers to the east of Jakarta, equipped with high-class and modern residential, commercial, industrial, cultural and educational centers.
