However, this year, August felt quite differently from ‘normal’ Augusts, and there are two reasons for this, namely:

(1) For the first time, the Indonesian President led the Independence Day ceremony in Indonesia’s (future) capital city of Nusantara (located in East Kalimantan), and

(2) There occurred heavy political activity in August 2024 in relation to the regional elections, the incoming President, and a proposed revision of the Regional Elections Law.



Topic I - Independence Day Ceremony in Nusantara

In line with the pledge that Indonesian President Joko Widodo made a few years ago, the ceremony for the 79th commemoration of Indonesia’s Independence was held on 17 August 2024 in Nusantara, in front of the new Presidential Palace that is currently being built (in the form of the mythical eagle-winged protector figure called Garuda).

Earlier, there had been some doubts whether this was a realistic target as the new capital city is still in the middle of being constructed (which in total will take decades before full completion).

Indeed, in the end, fewer guests (than had earlier been planned) were invited to the ceremony in Nusantara, which is caused by construction of the capital being behind schedule. And so, it were not the earlier planned thousands of guests who witnessed the ceremony in Nusantara, but instead slightly over 1,000 of invited guests only.
