The University of Indonesia (UI), located in the Jakarta area, remains the best tertiary-level educational institution in Indonesia, followed by the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, and the Airlangga University in Surabaya.

Muhammad Anis, Rector at UI, expressed his contentment, saying the improvement of UI's ranking in the Asia index reflects worldwide recognition of UI's quality education. He added that an improving ranking is not the objective that is pursued by UI. Instead the educational institution continuously aims to produce high-quality graduates and improve the quality of education, research and services.

To compile the QS University Rankings the following indicators are used: (1) academic reputation, (2) employer reputation, (3) faculty/student ratio, (4) citations per paper and papers per faculty, (5) staff with a PhD, (6) proportion of international faculty and proportion of international students, (7) proportion of inbound exchange students and proportion of outbound exchange students. The QS University Ranking 2016 assessed more than 350 universities across the Asian continent.
