What Do We Discuss in the Report?

While the majority of topics discussed in the report involve the economy of Indonesia, we had plenty of reason to focus on politics too. After all, Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office in the United States. This is something that has global implications. In fact, when completing the January 2025 edition, markets went downhill as Trump threatened to impose steep tariffs on products from Canada, Colombia, the European Union and China.

Interestingly enough, under Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia decided to join the BRICS+ bloc. It is a ten-member bloc (aiming at reducing dependence on Western countries and currencies as well as Western-led international institutions) that includes the three biggest 'enemies' of the United States, namely Russia, China and Iran. Could this disrupt diplomatic relations between Indonesia and the United States? And, what exactly does BRICS+ do? And, in what way can Indonesia benefit from BRICS+ membership? These are questions we discuss in the report's first article.

Another interest topic that has political consequences for Indonesia is the new Constitutional Court ruling that scraps the presidential threshold in national elections. Likely starting from the 2029 presidential election, all political parties (that meet the requirements as set in Indonesia's Elections Law) will be able to select a candidate for the presidential election. That is a big change, indeed. What exactly are the implications? This is discussed in the report's second article.

The third article in the January 2025 edition zooms in on the latest macroeconomic data of Indonesia, such as retail sales (including car and motorcycle sales), consumer confidence, credit growth, manufacturing activity and foreign tourist arrivals, with the purpose of assessing the present state of the Indonesian economy, and thus allow us to set a projection for the country's economic growth.

Then, we move to agricultural commodities, by presenting an in-depth analysis of Indonesia's rubber sector, discussing Indonesia's natural rubber production, plantations, productivity and export, while also putting the role of Indonesia in the rubber sector in global perspective.

Other articles that are available in the report zoom in on inflation and monetary policy.
