What do we discuss in this June 2024 edition?

Firstly, we discuss the arrival of Elon Musk's Starlink in Indonesia. Indonesian households and businesses can now subscribe to the Internet services provided by the American company that uses special low-orbitting satellites allowing Internet access at any location. Does Starlink threaten the existing telecom companies in Indonesia, or, can they co-exist peacefully?

And in the context of telecommunications, we also take a quick look at the recent cyberattack on the data center in Surabaya. This attack seriously derailed government services across the country. What did the attack expose exactly?

Another interesting topic is Indonesia's cement industry. Over a decade ago this was a thriving industry amid rapid property and infrastructure development. However, it sort of got derailed by its own success as investment realization caused huge excess capacity.

We also deliver an in-depth article on the decision of the Indonesian government to allow the country's religious organizations to turn into coal mining players. Religion and coal mining is a strange combination, and therefore it is worth taking a closer look at this topic.

We also devote attention to the international political environment as various elections in Europe and the start of the presidential election in the United States seem to show a move to the right. What explains rising conservatism in the West? And can Indonesia learn something from this?

As usual, we also devote various articles to the latest macreconomic indicators to assess the current state of the Indonesian economy. This includes inflation, trade, retail sales, consumer confidence, car/motorcycle sales and monetary policy.
