Internet in Indonesia: Internet Connection Speed Remains Weak

The report describes the latest Akamai Internet connection speed in various regions around the world for the second quarter of 2014.

Although Indonesia’s average Internet connection speed has improved 5.1 percent quarter-on-quarter (q/q) to 2.5 Mbps (from 2.4 Mbps in the first quarter of 2014), Indonesia’s ranking fell from 93 to 101 as other countries posted much larger growth. The worldwide connection speed grew 21 percent to 4.6 Mbps, indicating that Internet connection speed development in Indonesia is sluggish and lags far behind growth in other countries (including regional peers).

South Korea, which has put great priority to supplying high-speed internet to its citizens, remained in first place with an average connection speed of 24.6 Mbps. Second in the ranking was Hong Kong (15.7 Mbps), followed by Japan and Switzerland on third place (14.9 Mbps). The United States, the world’s largest economy, comes in 14th place (11.4Mbps). Vietnam recorded a 42 percentage point growth q/q and now ranks higher than Indonesia (which is Southeast Asia’s largest economy). It is a concern to see that quarterly Internet speed growth in other Southeast Asian countries sharply outperform growth in Indonesia.
