  • IMF: Indonesia's Debt-to-GDP Safe at 29%, Room for Tax Revenue Growth

    Last week, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that global debt is now higher than before the global financial crisis. The IMF estimates that global debt reached USD $164 trillion, equivalent to 225 percent of global GDP, with China being a key booster over the past decade. The IMF warned that nations with high government debt are vulnerable to a sudden tightening of global financing conditions. This could disrupt market access and jeopardize economic activity.

    Two international events are estimated to have a significant impact on the Indonesian economy in 2018. Firstly, the 2018 Asian Games, to be held from 18 August to 2 September 2018 in - and around - the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang. Secondly, the 2018 annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group, to be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, on 12-14 October 2018. Both events will trigger foreign exchange earnings and give rise to a boost in economic activity.

  • Despite Weak Sentiments Indonesia to Go-Ahead with Samurai Bonds Issuance

    On Friday (27/04) Indonesian stocks and the rupiah were stable, a performance that is in stark contrast to that of the past week. Capital outflows, the direct consequence of US treasury yields climbing beyond 3 percent, are also negative for Indonesian bond yields. Indonesia's 10-year state bond yield (FR0064) rose to 7.130 percent on Thursday (26/04), its highest position since July 2017 and jumping from 6.995 percent on the preceding day.

    Indonesia's Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) has concluded that it is proven that state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II has been engaged in monopoly behavior related to services and delivery of (incoming and outgoing) cargo and mail at the international airport of Kualanamu in North Sumatra.
