Jakarta Marathon 2013: Chance to Promote Jakarta in the Global Media
Seeing marathons being organized in some of the world's largest cities (which gain attention from the global press), the Jakarta administration felt it could not be left behind. On Sunday 27 October 2013, the first ever marathon of Jakarta will be held, with its route passing by some of Jakarta's most famous landmarks, including the National Monument (Monas), the Istiqlal Mosque, the Cathedral Church, Old Batavia, and the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout. The Jakarta marathon also forms the first internationally-recognized marathon in Southeast Asia.
The Jakarta administration fosters high ambitions to make this marathon a world-class one as it will promote sports tourism as well as general tourism in Indonesia and, more generally, it constitutes a good opportunity to put Jakarta into the global spotlight due to worldwide press coverage.
About 10,000 professional and amateur participants, from 15 to 20 different countries, are expected to join the marathon. There are six race categories: the full marathon (42,195 km), a half marathon, a 10K and 5K run, a wheelchair run and, lastly, also a children's sprint (Maratoonz). Total price money amounts to IDR 4 billion (USD $353,982).
The event, fully supported by Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy as well as the Jakarta City Government, is organized by Inspiro in cooperation with the Association of Indonesian Athletes (PASI) and the Amaury Sports Organization (ASO).
