Task of General Electric (GE) is to provide combined cycle gas turbines for the power plant. Wianda Pusponegoro, Vice President Corporate Communication at Pertamina, said the participation of GE in the consortium will strengthen its bid to build and operate the power plant as the American partner brings in more efficient technology. Furthermore, for engineering, procurement and construction for the plant, the consortium teams up with South Korea's Samsung C&T.

However, there are more parties interested in this project. Previously, Medco Power Generation Indonesia expressed its interest to handle the Jawa I project. Medco teamed up with Japan-based general trading company Mitsui & Co Ltd to bid for the USD $2 billion power station project.

The tender for the construction of Jawa I will open in May 2016. This project is part of Indonesia's ambitious target to establish 35 GW of additional power by 2019 (requiring USD $87 billion in total investment), most of which coal-powered. Provided construction can start rapidly after the winner of the tender has been announced, the power plant should be able to come online in 2019.
