Widodo’s decision to replace six ministers is related to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and to ongoing investigations by the country’s anti-graft watchdog the Corruption Eradication Commission (Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi, or KPK).

While in two cases the replacement was necessary because the ministers in question are object of KPK investigations, and in one case the minister in question can be held responsible for not managing to contain the COVID-19 outbreak across the country, there also seems to be one case where the minister was replaced purely because of political strategy (in an attempt to maintain the support of certain political parties). In the two remaining cases, the exact reasons for changing the minister are a bit less clear, but we do have a suspicion.
