Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry targets to replace the cost recovery scheme in the oil and gas industry in January 2017. Instead, the government would use contracts with a gross profit sharing mechanism. The new scheme would simplify procedures (making the investment climate more attractive) while Indonesia "continues to prioritize the interests of the nation and optimize the use of local resources and labor", Deputy Energy Minister Arcandra Tahar said. The proposed changes will not affect existing contracts between contractors and the Indonesian government.

Indonesia Investments updated the company profile of Elnusa, an integrated upstream oil and gas company. Core business of Elnusa, which is part of the state-owned Pertamina Group, involves geoscience, drilling and oilfield services. As the company is closely connected to the Indonesian government, it would benefit of the government's commitment to increase oil lifting. However, the current condition of Indonesia's oil and gas sector is still not conducive for large investments. Elnusa is listed as ELSA on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX).

Indonesia’s crude oil production is expected to increase starting from mid-March 2015 as new oil fields will start to come online this month, including the Bukit Tua oil field (part of the Ketapang block in East Java and which is operated by Petronas Carigali). Over the past two decades Indonesia oil output has declined drastically amid maturing oil fields and the lack of exploration as well as other investments in Indonesia’s oil & gas sector. In 2014, Indonesia produced an average of 794,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd).
