Manufacturing activity continued to expand in the first month of 2023, even slightly accelerating from the preceding month. The S&P Global Indonesia Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) showed a reading of 51.3 points in January 2023, up modestly from 50.9 points in December 2022 (with 50.0 being the threshold that separates contraction from expansion in the manufacturing sector).
During the COVID-19 crisis, Indonesia’s manufacturing activity experienced extreme lows in Q2-2020 and Q3-2020 before entering a period of fragile recovery. But when the Indonesian government tightened social and business restrictions at the start of July 2021, manufacturing activity again plunged.
In August 2020 we were positively surprised as Indonesia’s manufacturing activity managed to expand (after experiencing five straight months of contraction) despite the country still being in the middle of the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis.
It was not the greatest start of the 3rd quarter for Indonesian manufacturers. In fact, in July 2019, Indonesian manufacturing conditions deteriorated for the first time since January 2019. The IHS Markit Indonesia Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell from a reading of 50.6 in June 2019 to 49.6 in July 2019, below the 50.0 point threshold that separates expansion from contraction.
Activity in Indonesia’s manufacturing sector grew in March 2019 on the back of solid domestic demand.
