Fortune Indonesia, a business magazine, has compiled a top 100 of the most profitable Indonesian companies that were listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2012. The list was published on Tuesday (09/07) in Jakarta. The company that is leading Fortune's ranking is Astra International, one of the largest diversified conglomerates in Indonesia. Astra is not only the most profitable (net profit) company that is listed on the IDX but also the leading company in terms of highest revenue.

Unilever Indonesia, a major consumer goods producer of Indonesia, plans to distribute IDR 2.54 trillion (USD $260.11 million) in final dividend to its shareholders. The dividend, which is equivalent to IDR 334 per share, will be paid out on 13 July 2013. Together with the company's interim dividend, which was paid out on 20 December 2012, Unilever Indonesia uses its full net income of 2012 (IDR 4.83 trillion) to please the shareholders. Unilever Indonesia Holding BV has an 85 percent stake in the company.

Up to Wednesday (15/05/13), 69 Indonesian companies have announced to pay out dividends for the financial year 2012 to their shareholders, totaling a combined amount of IDR 64.1 trillion (USD 6.57 billion). This amount is equivalent to 41 percent of 2012's net profit of the 69 companies. In the weeks ahead, it is expected that more companies will announce dividend payouts. In 2012, more than one hundred listed companies on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) paid out dividends (of a total number of 462 listed companies at end 2012).

This step will make Telkom's shares more affordable and increases its liquidity. Indonesia's largest listed property developer, PT Lippo Karawaci, will distribute IDR 270 billion (USD $27.8 million) in dividends to its shareholders (IDR 11,86 per share). This amount is equivalent to 25.5 percent of the company's net profit in 2012. The developer posted a 49.7 percent increase in net profit last year to IDR 1.06 trillion (USD $109.3 million). The company is convinced that it will increase its net profit to IDR 1.9 trillion (USD $195.9) in 2013.

BW Plantation (BWPT), a mid-sized crude palm oil (CPO) and palm kernels (PK) producer, felt the impact of weak global demand for commodities in 2012. The company's net profit in 2012 fell 18.17 percent to IDR 262.18 billion (US $26.89 million). Profit per share fell to IDR 64,83 from IDR 79,35 per share last year. The decline in profit was particularly caused by an increase in operating expenses from IDR 131.05 billion (US $13.44 million) to IDR 153.87 billion (US $15.78 million).

Bank Central Asia (BBCA), Indonesia’s largest lender by market value and second largest bank by assets, posted net profit of IDR 11.72 trillion (US $1.2 billion) in 2012, meaning an 8.3 percent increase from last year's result. This growth is limited compared to net profit of its main competitors Bank Mandiri that posted 26.6 percent growth in 2012, and Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) that posted a 22.8 percent growth in net profit.

Garuda Indonesia (GIAA), one of Indonesia's biggest airlines, posted a 100 percent increase in net profit to US $145.4 million in 2012 from US $72.7 million a year earlier. Operating profit of the company rose 82 percent to US $110.8 million from US $64.2 million in 2011. These numbers were supported by a 19.6 percent increase in passengers from 17.1 million in 2011 to 20.4 million last year, while its seat load factor rose to 75.9 percent from a previous 75.2 percent.

Declining profit in Indonesia's coal industry was also confirmed by Adaro Energy's (ADRO) net profit of 2012. The coal mining company reported net profit of US $385.34 million, a 30 percent fall compared to 2011 when it amounted US $550.35 million. Earnings per share also declined from US $0,01721 in 2011 to US $0,01205 in 2012. Lower sales volume and lower global coal prices were cited as the major factors behind the decline.

Shareholders of Astra Agro Lestari, Indonesia's largest agribusiness company by value (which is particularly engaged in palm oil and rubber plantations), agreed to distribute IDR 1.08 trillion (USD $111 million) in dividends to its shareholders. The allocated amount is equivalent to about 45 percent of the company's net profit in 2012. Dividend per share is set at IDR 685 (USD $0.071). Last November, the company had already paid interim dividend of IDR 230 per share. Final dividend will be paid on 3 June 2013.

Shareholders of Vale Indonesia, Indonesia's largest nickel producer, approved the proposal to allocate USD $6.7 million to general reserve and to distribute final dividend of USD $0.00252 per share. The dividend - equivalent to USD $25 million in aggregate from Vale Indonesia's net profit - will be paid on 31 May 2013. Indonesian shareholders will be paid in Indonesian rupiah based on the Central Bank's mid rate on 17 May 2013. Non-Indonesian shareholders will be paid in US dollar.

Factors that contributed to Indonesia's lower than expected economic growth last year were weak exports due to poor international trade and non-optimal government spending. On the positive side, all sectors of the Indonesian economy experienced growth.
