At the end of trading on Tuesday (09/05) the company's market cap stood at IDR 443.8 trillion (approx. USD $33.4 billion), replacing cigarette manufacturer HM Sampoerna with its market cap at IDR 440.8 trillion. BCA, part of the Djarum Group, is the second-largest bank in Indonesia in terms of assets.
Even though Indonesia's Financial Services Authority (OJK) has been eager to encourage local banks to raise efficiency, banks' ratio of operating expenses to operating income (ROEOI) has in fact risen. For example, the ROEOI of Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) rose 406 basis points from 68.04 percent in March 2015 to 72.10 percent in March 2016. BRI's Finance Director Haru Koesmahargyo said the bank's higher ROEOI is caused by the bank's rising non-performing loan (NPL) ratio. In Q1-2016 BRI's NPL ratio rose 20 basis points to 2.22 percent.
Bank Central Asia (BCA), one of the largest banks in Indonesia, saw its net profit rise 9.3 percent year-on-year (y/y) to IDR 18 trillion (approx. USD $1.4 billion) in 2015, supported by strong loan growth and the relatively low cost of funds. Meanwhile, BCA's net interest income, the difference between interest earned and interest paid, grew 12 (y/y) to IDR 35.9 trillion (approx. USD $2.7 billion) and non-interest income, which includes fees such as deposit and transaction fees, rose 28.5 percent (y/y) to IDR 12 trillion (approx. USD $909 million).
Indonesian stocks continued to fall today (30/04). After the first trading session, Indonesia’s benchmark Jakarta Composite Index fell 0.11 percent to 5,099.83 points. The index was negatively affected by yesterday’s weakening stock indices in the USA and Europe. These indices experienced a correction due to mixed signals stemming from the latest US Federal Reserve’s FOMC meeting. Contrary to its March policy statement, the Fed did not rule out hiking rates at the next meeting. However, it also downgraded the US growth outlook.
While other leading Indonesian banks are eager to expand business by opening branches in neighbouring countries, Bank Central Asia (BCA) stays focused on the domestic market. BCA, Indonesia’s largest private bank, is eyeing to acquire several smaller banks in Indonesia as part of its (inorganic) business growth model this year. Although Deputy Governor of the central bank of Indonesia (Bank Indonesia), Halim Alamsyah, said that the non-performing loan (NPL) level in Indonesia’s banking sector is currently safe at 2.24 percent (well below the five percent threshold which is considered safe), the institution has been monitoring the high level of NPLs in four sectors: construction, trade, mining and social services. The bank will study why the ratio has been growing - whether it is a temporary phenomenon or not - and search the correct policy approach to address this issue.
Indonesia Investments updated the company file of Bank Central Asia (BCA). The company is Indonesia’s largest lender by market value and the country's second largest bank by assets. Robust loan disbursements translated into BCA's higher net profit growth in the first half of 2013. In this period the bank posted a 19.3 percent growth (yoy) in net profits to IDR 6.3 trillion, mainly supported by higher net interest income and fee-based income. The bank's loan portfolio grew 24 percent to IDR 280.4 trillion.

Garuda Indonesia, the country's top-class airline, is planning to conduct a rights issue in the first quarter of 2014. Through this corporate action, which has already been approved by the shareholders, the state-controlled company aims to raise IDR 2 trillion (USD $162.6 million). For 2014, the airline plans to allocate IDR 4 trillion in capital expenditure (capex) for business expansion. About half of this amount should originate from funds generated through the rights issue.
Indonesia's main stock index (IHSG) fell 3.68 percent to 4,433.63 on Monday's trading day (08/07). This current level is the lowest level of the IHSG since 26 June 2013. Of the 473 listed companies, 263 were down, 21 were up and the remainder did not move. Most Asian indices fell due to concerns about China's credit crisis that may impact on the country's economic growth and that the positive US employment report will affect continuation of the Federal Reserve's quantitative easing program. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index fell 1.6 percent.
The upward movements of both American and European stock indices on Friday (03/05/13) provided good support for today's performances of indices in Asia, including the Indonesia Stock Index (IHSG). After having been hit hard for two consecutive trading day's, the IHSG rebounded despite foreign investors still selling off their Indonesian stocks. Others, however, use this momentum to hunt for stocks that are now considered cheap after last week's fall.
